AAA has developed a premier, research-based curriculum with responsible teen driving in mind, so you can confidently put your new driver behind the wheel.

There are two online course options to choose from:

  • A parent-taught course, including 32-hour online training
  • Teen online 32-hour driver training course

Parent-taught course

AAA Texas now offers a parent-taught course that enables members or legal guardians to provide behind-the-wheel instruction to their teen student. This course meets Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) guidelines. Parents or guardians must meet the requirements set by the TDLR and complete an application before purchasing the AAA Texas parent-taught course.

Teens and their parents or guardians are required to request state approval to participate in the Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) program by completing a TDLR application. Once approved, TDLR will send a PTDE program guide with information and forms. Once you have the TDLR guide, your teen will be able to begin the 32-hour online course material necessary for them to apply for their first Texas learner's permit and driver's license. Online driver training course

Teens can work alone and at their own pace through AAA's 32-hour, TDLR-approved online driver education course which includes training videos, crash cam footage, driving simulations, interactive memory exercises, and quizzes. Teens who complete the course will be eligible to apply for a Texas learner license if they are at least 15 years old. This course is intended to be combined with a licensed driving school for in-car instruction. Inquire about behind-the-wheel lesson options here.

Frequently asked questions

New to our driving program? Find answers to the most common questions about lessons, scheduling, and what to expect on your road to getting licensed.

Students can book their first in-car lesson on or after the "In-Car Availability Date" chosen during the enrollment process. A permit is required to begin driving lessons. If you do not have your permit, you will need to complete our 32-hour online course and pass the Texas DPS knowledge test. Behind-the-wheel lessons cannot be scheduled until your account is paid in full.

You can schedule lessons online at the Student Portal. Students will receive an email with instructions on how to access the Student Portal. We allow two lessons to be scheduled at one time which are scheduled a minimum of two weeks apart.

The length of time it takes to complete the program is dependent on the availability of the student, the availability of the instructors and other events outside The Auto Club's control. Lessons are spaced a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks apart to allow time to practice between lessons. Please keep in mind that teens must hold their Texas learner's permit for at least six months before taking their driving test, as required by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Students may apply for their learner's permit from age 15.

We do not pick up at home. Unlike other driving schools, the Auto Club has designed routes for each lesson that are set to develop good driving habits and meet Auto Club specific learning objectives. These Auto Club approved routes all begin and end at the Auto Club location to provide instruction consistency and the best use of lesson time.

If you cancel within 3 business days of enrollment, you will not incur any fees. After 3 business days, a fee will apply. See Program Terms and Conditions which is available on the Student Portal.

If you need to cancel and reschedule an in-car lesson, you may do so through the Student Portal. Lessons must be cancelled at least 24 hours prior to the lesson. Otherwise a $60 fee will apply.

The remaining balance on your account will be due 30 days after your initial payment. You can use the Student Portal to make your final payment. Behind-the-wheel lessons cannot be scheduled until your account is paid in full.

Our program objectives are based on safety and not speed of completion. One-hour lessons allow us to spread the learning process over the 6-month permit period which is required by the Texas DPS and allows ample time to practice between lessons. Two-hour behind-the-wheel lessons offered by other schools can be a stressful experience for a new driver.

Yes. The online course expires 180 calendar days from the Enrollment Date. The online course must be completed and driving instruction permit obtained prior to scheduling your first behind-the-wheel lesson.

All in-car lessons must be completed within one year from the Enrollment Date. No refunds after one year after the Enrollment Date.
